I began practicing Yoga and Pilates in 2008 after having undergone a failed back surgery. After trying every prescription, Chiropractor, therapist, audiobook, Reiki master, inversion table salesman, my physical therapist suggested that I try Yoga. I initially laughed at the thought; envisioning candles and meditation and chanting and women in spandex sitting criss cross apple sauce.. But I was still in excruciating pain, feeling quite desperate, and saw a Yoga studio one day out driving. (I had given up motorcycling, the pain was too bad)
I gave the guy at the desk $20 for 2 weeks of Yoga classes , and he said come back tomorrow for your first class.
Turns out it was a Hot Yoga. I didn't know that going in.. I wore sweatpants and a long sleeve shirt to my first class. It was 90 minutes in approximately one million degrees with a relative humidity of insanity. You can imaging how that went.
I’m frugal so I came again the next day. And everyday for the 2 weeks. And ultimately I came everyday for the next 60 days in a row because I felt so amazing. I couldn't even believe it. The struggle was worth it.. I had such profound healing benefits from the Yoga postures practiced in that environment, it quickly became a part of my daily routine. But I had no idea what this yoga would give me in the long run.
You see, I was born with Crohn’s Disease. It's been there my whole life. They say there’s no cure. It’s a torturous thing, and those affected by it oftentimes suffer in silence. Nobody likes to talk about digestive problems.
For the first 34 years of my life I couldn’t eat most fruits or vegetables. No nuts, grains, coffee, red meat, wheat, dairy. I was in and out of the hospital and had to constantly juggle medications and their various side effects. It’s not like that anymore. You see, a while back now, I became completely symptom free. Diet independent. I can eat whatever I’d like. No meds. No docs. I can have spinach and peanut butter and apples for the first time in my life.
With Yoga, Pilates, and all the things learned through disciplined practice, I was able to take my power back. To Rebel against the stress, anxiety, pain, and depression and reclaim my health. I have my life back. It wasn’t easy. Or fast. But it's doable.
I became a teacher in 2012, and ultimately a studio owner in 2015, to learn everything that I could about these transformative practices from the best teachers and mentors in the world, and share what I find with everyone.
